Intend to give anti-deportation campaign workshops to ;
“The most immediate workshop I intend to give is on 17th March 2008 at the Institute of Education in London to members of the campaign to Stop the Deportation of Guy Njike. Beyond that I am heavily involved with student activism, particularly at UCL where students there have been alarmed by Guy’s case and I believe will subsequently be interested in anti-deportation campaigning. I think it would be good to give a workshop at UCL on this and at other universities. Beyond that I would be available to be contacted by the NCADC if the need for a workshop anywhere in London arises. I will also spend two month this year in Ukraine. Some of my Ukrainian friends there are heavily involved with working with asylum seekers and refugees – or in fact are refugees themselves – and have also been involved in anti-deportation campaigns in Ukraine. I would like to take the experience and knowledge from the seminar to them and see how this could be adapted to circumstances in Ukraine and if they would benefit from similar seminars.”
Comments about the seminar ;
“The seminar really helped me think about the whole range of anti-deportation campaign tactics that can be used. I feel much better equipped to give my own anti-deportation campaign workshops or “talks” now.”

Intend to give anti-deportation campaign workshops to ;
Cameroonian community in London and elsewhere in the UK.
Comments about the seminar ;
“I have been involved in helping quite a few Cameroonian asylum seekers get out of detention, but this is never enough ; we need anti-deportation campaigns to enable people to do more positive and long-term activities to advance their cases. Being the Chair of NCADC means I know quite a lot about anti-deportation campaigning but that’s different from holding an anti-deportation campaign workshop. The seminar has enabled me to feel confident now in holding my own anti-deportation campaign workshops within the Cameroon community.
The Cameroon Support Network is meeting on Sunday the 6th of April 2008 to get ready for a meeting in the House of Commons (committee room 15) on the 22nd April with Jeremy Corbyn MP about the situation in Cameroon and also how to find ways to influence the government policy on deportation to Cameroon.
I want to give an anti-deportation campaign workshop at that meeting on April 6th to members of the Cameroon Support Network, probably together with one of the other Train-the-Trainer seminar participants (we can support each other as it’ll be our first time giving a workshop on our own).

Comments about the seminar ;
“I have been involved in a number of anti-deportation campaigns – some successful, some not.
I wrote an article in the News Statesman about the issues .
The Train-the-Trainer seminar has really got me thinking about what kind of training package we can put together to suit what we support. Most importantly, I now have the skills and confidence to run workshops.
We (the
SOAS Detainee Support Group ) are planning to run a series of anti-deportation campaign workshops here at the university. We aim to use the workshops to bring together those who want to set up their own campaigns with students and other young people who want to get actively involved."

Comments about the seminar ;
“One particular point caught my attention; Getting support from the unions. Following the workshop, i started actively searching for unions that fit my profile and needs. I identified the following:
(1) National Union of Students (NUS). I am in my second year of University, registered with the NUS a year and half ago but never really thought they would be able to help with anti deportation campaigns. Following the workshop I was able to identify the benefits getting support from the NUS to support my campaign.
(2) National Union Of Journalists (NUJ). I and a couple friends are running a website;
www.gayrightsuganda.org , the website highlights the struggle of gay Ugandans, in and out of Uganda. As result, I am freelance journalist (but never thought about it in that context until after the workshop). I am in the process of registering with NUJ.
The workshop really helped me identify services and Organizations (for example Unions) that are out there and would be able to provide support for a campaign by providing campaign infrastructure. Unions have experience with campaign activities, as result they have a campaign infrastructure that members could always benefit from”

“I have been involved in the
Meltem Avcil campaign and others, but we seem to find ourselves in fire-fighting mode and end up having no time to be more proactive. This seminar has helped me see the practical steps we can take to set up more anti-deportation campaigns and I will be holding my own workshop soon.”

“Even though I was successful in
my own anti-deportation campaign (I got Refugee Status a few months ago), I wouldn’t say I knew everything there is to know about campaign tactics. The seminar helped me learn more and I can couple this with my own personal experiences to give, what I feel should be an effective anti-deportation campaign workshop”.

“I was involved with the anti-deportation campaign of a Yarl’s Wood detainees I was visiting. It was rather a “baptism of fire” because I hadn’t had that much information about helping to run an anti-deportation campaign before. The seminar helped me see all the different types of activities a campaign could engage with and I intend to share this with other students”.

Comments about the seminar ;
“I am coordinating a
campaign on behalf of Behnam , a brilliant young artist who together with his mother faces prison, torture end likely death in Iran. Behnam is a former student of mine.
I am also a friend of
Pegah in Sheffield who is also fighting deportation to Iran where she faces torture / execution.
Going “public” is a massive decision for an asylum seeker and I needed to know more about the risks and benefits of a public campaign. The seminar has helped me, especially having heard the experience of participants facing deportation who had run or are running their own campaigns.”
